Materials:
Uranyl acetate powder
balance that can be moved to a fume hood
Hot plate
milli-Q filtered water
weighing dish
brown 200ml stock bottle
Whatman #1 filter paper
glass funnel
100 ml volumatric flask
Latex Gloves, lab coat, protective mask
stir bar
stirring plate
Note: Once glassware is contaminated with heavy metal stains it should not be used to prepare other chemical solutions)
Procedure:
Have balance set up in the fume hood.
Heat to near boiling approximately 125ml of milli-Q water.
Weigh out 4 grams of uranyl acetate powder into a 200ml flask taking care not to breath the dust.
Add approximately 98ml of hot water to the flask.
Stir on stir plate until dissolved(this will take a while and small percentage of salt will not go into solution).
Cool solution down to room temperature.
Filt 4% stock solution into brown 200ml bottle(UA solutions are sensitive to light) and cab tightly and label. This stock solution can be store for months at room temperature.
Rinse contaminated glassware into a waste bottle for uranyl acetate solution and store separate from laboratory glassware. Solid waste that is contaminated with uranyl acetate should be disposed of in a solid waste container set aside for radioactive wastes.
